Inference as Risk Identification
On June 9th, Asbjørn Torvanger from our partner CICERO held a presentation on “Are data centers sustainable?” at a seminar on the sustainability of AI.
The seminar was organised by CIENS - Oslo Centre for Interdisciplinary Environmental and Social Research and the University of Oslo.
The presentation focused on estimated power consumption of data centers in Norway until 2050, required land use if the additional power is produced by land-based wind power and the potential of cooling water for district heating.
Torvanger concluded that Norway is in need of a strategy for AI and data centers, a more efficient allocation of power for new data centers and other big projects and questioned whether data centers should receive government support through loan guarantees.
The seminar (in Norwagian) was recorded and is available on YouTube.
Torvanger’s slides (in Norwegian) are made available here.
